Pictured here are tools of the Buffalo Hunter’s trade. A Heavy barreled rifle, usually in Government .45-70 caliber but all the way up to civilian .50-100 caliber. The first number refers to the size of the bullet in diameter–.50 is a half inch–and the second number is the size of the propellant charge in grains of black powder. A good site, calibrated to 1,000 yards, and a block of skinning knives helped round out the hunting outfit’s kit.
