Non-commissioned officers of the 10th US Cavalry
The 10th US Cavalry, one of the black regiments authorized by Congress in 1866, mustered at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and served for the next decade on the central and southern Great Plains, including the Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma). This command did not come to Texas until 1873, but stayed in the region until 1885. During its tenure in Texas, the 10th US Cavalry participated in the last great campaigns against Indians, while also patrolling, mapping, and scouting the great expanse of West Texas and the Trans-Pecos.
