The Buffalo Slaughter created several boom towns that aligned much like a crescent along the eastern edge of the Texas herd. Hunters from Kansas dropped down and established shanty settlements like Hide Town (two miles east of present-day Mobeetie, Texas) and Rath City. Fort Griffin and Fort Concho supported towns that also served as resupply centers for hunters needing casings, bullets, and powder. It didn’t take long for the herds to disappear.
