The Heart of Texas

Brady calls itself the “Heart of Texas.” Geographically speaking, it is in the center of the state. In terms of population, however, Texas has undergone some pretty interesting gyrations. For most of Lone Star history, the population center has moved steadily westward. That is, until the 1930s, when Depression Era hardships moved a lot of population out of the rural western counties and into the cities back east. The march toward the sunset continued in the 1950s and 1960s but then reversed, dramatically, in the decades since, with a trend toward the southeast. The growth of San Antonio and Houston accounts for much of the sidling.
