Dragón de Cuera
The Spanish deployed presidial troops along their northern frontera including men like this Dragón de Cuera, or Leather Dragoon. Armored with leather jacket and shield, armed with lance, carbine, and pistol, equipped with heavy saddle, sturdy stirrups, large roweled spurs, and saddle bags, and mounted on heavy horses, these troops could handle their own in a melee with Comanches. Even so, there were too few of them at hand, and they were spread too thin, to stop the rise of the Comanche Empire.
