William Barrett Travis Arrives in Austin’s Colony (CEC)

In this document written by William Barret Travis to Stephen F. Austin on May 23, 1831, Travis agrees to become one of Austin’s settlers in Texas.

Travis’s story is well documented as being a lawyer in San Felipe. Although active in various revolutionary matters, he was on the fence at the time as to whether Texas should become independent.

His letter states:

Having been admitted by S.F. Austin as one of the settlers under his contracts with gov’t., I agree and promise to pay to said Austin on order Ten Dollars on the receipt of my title for Land as a settler under said contract and forty Dollars in one year there after.
